The much-anticipated International Balloon Festival opened in Hong Kong today, drawing large crowds eager to witness colorful displays along the city’s iconic harborfront.
Teams from the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and Malaysia are taking part, staging static balloon exhibitions as flying remains restricted in the harbor area due to strong winds. Pilots noted that weather conditions continue to pose challenges, with safety taking top priority.
British pilot Ashley Moore, who has been preparing since February, said he is particularly looking forward to the night-time “glow” display, when balloons will be illuminated against the evening skyline. Japanese participant Endo Mamoru emphasized that balloon flights are entirely dependent on safe weather conditions.
Spectators gathered in large numbers to watch the balloons inflate, with many describing the event as a rare and vibrant cultural moment for Hong Kong.
The festival runs from September 4–7, offering visitors a chance to enjoy static displays, night shows, and community activities celebrating the art of ballooning.
