The United Kingdom government has declared an “antisemitism emergency” following a series of violent incidents targeting Jewish communities, including arson attacks and a stabbing in London.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said authorities would take decisive action to combat rising hatred after two Jewish men were seriously injured in a knife attack in the Golders Green area, a hub for the country’s Jewish population. Both victims are reported to be in stable condition.
In response to the attack, the UK raised its official terror threat level from “substantial” to “severe,” indicating that another attack is considered highly likely in the coming months. Police have arrested a 45-year-old suspect on suspicion of attempted murder and are investigating possible links to extremist networks, including those with alleged connections to Iran.
The incident follows a string of arson attacks on synagogues and Jewish institutions, intensifying fears within the community. Authorities say dozens of arrests have already been made in connection with these incidents, though investigations remain ongoing.
Starmer acknowledged growing anxiety among Jewish residents and pledged increased protection, including enhanced police patrols and security at religious and community sites. The government has also announced additional funding to strengthen safety measures and accelerate legal action against perpetrators.
Despite these assurances, some members of the Jewish community have criticized the government, arguing that more should have been done earlier to curb antisemitism. Protests during the prime minister’s visit to Golders Green reflected frustration and distrust among sections of the public.
Officials say the rise in antisemitic incidents has been linked in part to broader geopolitical tensions, particularly conflicts in the Middle East. Security agencies have warned of both extremist and state-linked threats, highlighting the complexity of the situation.
