In a dramatic upset that sent shockwaves through African rugby, Zimbabwe secured qualification for the 2027 Rugby World Cup after narrowly defeating Namibia 30-28 in the Africa Cup final on Saturday.
The victory marks Zimbabwe’s first return to the global rugby stage since 1991 and positions them as Africa’s second representative at the 2027 tournament in Australia, alongside reigning world champions South Africa.
Known as the Sables, Zimbabwe now becomes only the third African nation to qualify for the Rugby World Cup in the professional era. Their win came despite Namibia’s long-standing dominance in regional rugby a team that has featured in the last seven World Cups and had defeated Zimbabwe in 31 of their 35 previous encounters.
The high-stakes clash saw Zimbabwe build a commanding 30-16 lead with just 20 minutes remaining. However, Namibia surged late, scoring two tries to bring the score within two points. A long-range penalty attempt from Namibia in the dying seconds sailed wide, sealing Zimbabwe’s historic triumph.
Although defeated, Namibia remains in contention for a spot at the World Cup. As Africa Cup runner-up, they will face the United Arab Emirates the Asia championship runner-up in a play-off match this Saturday in Uganda. The winner will advance to the final qualification tournament.
The 2027 Rugby World Cup, set to feature a record 24 teams, promises to bring new energy and diverse talent to the international rugby scene. Zimbabwe’s return, after a 36-year absence, adds to the growing excitement and signals a resurgence for African rugby on the world stage.
