Rory McIlroy has claimed his second Masters title after surviving a tense final round at Augusta National, finishing with a one-shot victory to secure another green jacket and strengthen his place among golf’s elite.
McIlroy ended the tournament at 12-under 276, holding off a late challenge from Scottie Scheffler in a dramatic finish that kept fans on edge until the final hole.
The Northern Irish golfer entered the final round with momentum but saw his advantage slip as rivals Cameron Young and Justin Rose briefly took the lead during a fiercely contested Sunday showdown. McIlroy, however, regained control with crucial birdies around the famed Amen Corner, including a key shot over Rae’s Creek at the 12th hole that proved decisive.
The victory places McIlroy in distinguished company, joining Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus as one of the few players to win the Masters multiple times.
Reflecting on the victory, McIlroy said winning the tournament remains one of the most difficult achievements in golf despite his previous success. He noted that the challenge of returning as champion made the latest triumph even more satisfying.
The final holes were far from comfortable. McIlroy faced several tense moments, including a risky approach on the 15th and a difficult recovery on the 17th that helped him maintain his narrow lead heading to the final hole.
Justin Rose briefly surged into contention but lost momentum around Amen Corner after a series of costly bogeys, while Cameron Young’s early lead faded after mistakes on the front nine. Scheffler mounted a late push but ultimately settled for second place.
With the victory, McIlroy now holds six major titles, placing him alongside legendary players including Nick Faldo, Lee Trevino and Phil Mickelson.
His latest triumph continues a remarkable period in his career, further cementing his legacy at Augusta National, where he has now become a two-time Masters champion.
