Authorities in the United States say the man accused of opening fire during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington is expected to face criminal charges, as investigators point to evidence suggesting the attack may have been politically motivated.
The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, allegedly attempted to breach a security checkpoint at the Washington Hilton on Saturday night while armed with multiple weapons, including firearms and knives.
Law enforcement officials say Allen sent writings to family members shortly before the incident, expressing grievances linked to U.S. government policies and referencing political leadership without naming individuals directly. Investigators are reviewing the message alongside social media activity and interviews with relatives as part of efforts to determine motive.
Authorities say Allen’s brother alerted police in Connecticut after receiving the writings, prompting local authorities to notify federal agencies. The suspect’s sister also told investigators he had legally purchased weapons in California and kept them without their parents’ knowledge.
Officials believe Allen acted alone and had traveled across several states before arriving in Washington, where he checked into the hotel days before the event. The shooting occurred shortly after the high-profile dinner began, sending guests scrambling for cover as security personnel intervened.
According to officials, the suspect was subdued before gaining access to the main ballroom. Donald Trump, who was present at the event, was escorted from the stage unharmed.
U.S. authorities say the suspect may have intended to target members of the administration, including the president. Acting Justice Department leadership indicated that the investigation is ongoing as officials assess the full scope of the threat.
The annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which draws journalists, government officials and public figures, was suspended following the incident and is expected to be rescheduled.
Officials say security measures will be reviewed as investigations continue into one of the most serious incidents to disrupt the event in recent years.
