A player of Berekum Chelsea has been killed after the team’s bus was attacked by suspected armed robbers while returning from a league match, Ghana’s football authorities confirmed on Monday.
The victim, identified as 20-year-old winger Dominic Frimpong, died following the incident which occurred on Sunday as the team traveled back from a Ghana Premier League game against Samartex in Samreboi in southern Ghana.
According to a statement from the club, masked attackers armed with guns and assault rifles opened fire on the team bus as the driver attempted to reverse away from the scene. Players and technical staff reportedly fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire.
The club said another player sustained serious injuries during the attack and is currently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
In a statement, the Ghana Football Association described Frimpong’s death as a major loss to the club and to Ghanaian football, noting that the young winger had shown strong promise and dedication to the sport.
Football authorities said measures would be taken to strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions across the country.
The latest incident adds to concerns over the safety of teams traveling for league matches. In 2023, the bus of Legon Cities was also attacked by suspected armed robbers, although no injuries were reported at the time.
Investigations into Sunday’s attack are ongoing.
