Global – In a landmark report released today, leading experts in agriculture, nutrition, and climate change have sounded a clarion call for a radical overhaul of global food systems. The report underscores the urgent need to address the escalating crisis of hunger while simultaneously mitigating the devastating impacts of climate change.

The report highlights a distressing trend: the number of people facing acute food insecurity is on the rise, reaching levels not seen in years. Factors such as conflict, economic instability, and extreme weather events, exacerbated by climate change, are driving this alarming increase in global hunger.

The intertwined challenges of food security and climate change demand a comprehensive response. A paradigm shift in how food is produced, distributed, and consumed is crucial to break the vicious cycle of hunger and environmental degradation

Emphasis must be placed on agro-ecological approaches that prioritize soil health, water conservation, and biodiversity. These practices enhance resilience to climate shocks while ensuring long-term food security.

Promoting diverse, nutritious diets is essential for human health and for reducing the pressure on specific crops and livestock systems. This shift supports local food systems and enhances resilience.

Significant strides must be made in minimizing post-harvest losses and addressing food waste across the supply chain. This not only conserves resources but also ensures that available food reaches those in need.

Supporting smallholder farmers, who play a pivotal role in global food production, is essential. Providing them with access to resources, markets, and climate-resilient technologies is crucial for sustainable agriculture.

Redirecting financial flows towards sustainable agriculture and food systems is imperative. This includes investments in research and development, as well as supporting the transition to climate-smart practices.

Addressing the intertwined challenges of hunger and climate change necessitates unprecedented international cooperation. Governments, civil society, the private sector, and international organizations must work together to enact policy reforms, mobilize resources, and implement concrete actions.

The report serves as a wake-up call to the world. Urgent action is required to rewire our food systems, ensuring they are equitable, sustainable, and resilient in the face of a changing climate. The choices we make now will determine the future of food security and environmental stability for generations to come.

The international community stands at a pivotal moment. The imperative to rewire food systems is not merely a matter of policy; it is a moral obligation to safeguard the well-being of our planet and all its inhabitants. The time for action is now.
