A devastating crash involving a double decker bus in central Stockholm on Friday afternoon has left multiple people dead and others injured, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred on Valhallavägen in Östermalm near the technical university stop during heavy rush hour traffic.
The bus, traveling from Norrtälje toward central Stockholm, struck the shelter and a pole directly in front of the stop. Witnesses described hearing scraping noises followed by loud impacts, with some people running into nearby shops in distress. Swedish police reported that several victims were trapped under the bus, while emergency crews treated casualties on the pavement. At least two people were transported to hospitals by ambulance.
Rescue services described the scene as chaotic. Oscar Davila of the rescue service told SVT that teams worked to assess the condition of the injured and clear a path for medical evacuation. The area saw a significant presence of police cars, fire engines, and ambulances.
The bus, operated by Transdev, is a regular service double decker. Lovisa Åbom, the company’s communications chief, said the firm is awaiting updates from authorities before commenting on the possible cause of the crash.
The driver has been detained, and police plan to question him as part of a preliminary investigation into gross negligent homicide. Nadia Norton, a police spokesperson, stated that investigators are documenting the scene and collecting witness accounts to determine whether criminal negligence was involved. The cause of the collision remains unclear.
Traffic authorities restricted movement on Valhallavägen between Odengatan and Engelbrektsgatan, diverting buses and cars while the scene was examined. Crowds gathered behind police barriers as officials worked to secure the area.
The crash occurred around 16:00 local time. Eyewitness accounts varied, with some suggesting the bus lost control before hitting the stop, while others said the collision happened without warning. Investigators are examining mechanical factors, driving patterns, and the driver’s condition to establish the sequence of events.
Swedish officials urged the public to refrain from speculation until the investigation concludes. Forensic teams are expected to work at the site into the night.
