Ukraine’s top security agency has confirmed the targeted killing of two suspected Russian agents believed to be behind the bold daylight assassination of Colonel Ivan Voronych, a senior officer of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
In a statement released Sunday, the SBU said the suspects were located and neutralized in the Kyiv region after resisting arrest. A graphic video shared by the agency showed two lifeless bodies sprawled on the ground, believed to be the male and female suspects wanted in connection with Thursday’s attack.
The assassination, which took place in the Ukrainian capital, was caught on surveillance cameras and has shaken the country’s intelligence and defense establishment.
High-Profile Target
Colonel Voronych, whose death stunned the nation, was reportedly a key figure in Ukraine’s covert operations within Russian-occupied territories. Media outlets cited intelligence sources claiming he played a crucial role in orchestrating last year’s surprise Ukrainian incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, a mission that embarrassed Moscow and bolstered Kyiv’s battlefield morale.
His murder is widely viewed as retaliation by Russian intelligence networks operating in Ukraine.
Drone Barrage Continues
The elimination of the suspects came amid an intense wave of Russian aerial assaults across the country. According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia launched 60 explosive drones overnight, following a week of relentless strikes involving hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles.
The military reported that 20 drones were intercepted, while another 20 were electronically jammed before reaching their targets.
Civilian Casualties Mount
The death toll from the weekend’s attacks continued to rise, with Ukrainian authorities confirming four civilian fatalities and 13 injuries in the Donetsk and Kherson regions. Images from Lviv showed burned-out buildings and residents sifting through rubble after a direct hit on a residential block.
Firefighters were seen battling blazes and assisting residents in the aftermath of Saturday’s aerial attack, adding to the humanitarian toll of the war that has now entered its third year.
Escalation of Shadow War
The killing of the alleged assassins by Ukraine’s SBU underscores the intensifying covert conflict playing out beneath the surface of conventional warfare. Security analysts believe Russia is increasingly resorting to targeted assassinations, sabotage, and drone warfare as it struggles to achieve decisive gains on the battlefield.
Ukraine, in turn, has vowed to step up counterintelligence operations and tighten security in urban centers as the war grows ever more complex and asymmetric.
