A quarter of a century after captivating the world with her raspy voice and genre-blending rhythms, Grammy-winning artist Macy Gray is hitting the road once again this time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of her landmark debut album On How Life Is.
Originally released in 1999, the album propelled Gray to global stardom with its standout single I Try, which went on to sell over three million copies in the United States and an estimated seven million worldwide. The soulful track also earned her the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2001.
Now, fans across Europe and the United States will get to experience the full album live as Gray embarks on a celebratory tour beginning in June. Speaking on the enduring appeal of her debut, Gray reflected: “I think it’s a great record. We’ve been listening to it because we’re going on tour to celebrate it… and it’s really great. I get what all the fuss was about.”
Listening to her early work again, the singer mused on the evolution of her signature voice. “It’s just interesting to hear my voice 25 years ago because, of course, the voice changes as you grow up.”
Since her debut, Gray has released 10 studio albums, including her most recent project Ruby in 2018. In addition to her music career, she has also appeared in several films, most notably Training Day (2001) alongside Denzel Washington and The Paperboy (2012).
Despite her diverse talents, it is her unmistakable voice that remains her hallmark. “I knew my voice was different… I didn’t sing like Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston,” she said. “So I really worked on just making my voice work, giving my voice a style… where I could still tell stories.”
As part of the anniversary tour, Gray will perform On How Life Is in its entirety, alongside select tracks from her broader catalogue. With her blend of soul, RnB, and unfiltered authenticity, Macy Gray’s return to the stage is poised to be both a nostalgic journey and a reaffirmation of her timeless artistry.
