A tragic road accident in Egypt’s Nile Delta claimed the lives of 19 people on Friday, after a truck collided with a minibus carrying workers on a regional road in Ashmoun, a city in Menoufia Governorate.
According to a statement from Egypt’s Ministry of Labor, the minibus was transporting the workers to their job site when it was struck by the truck, resulting in the complete destruction of the vehicle. Only three individuals survived the crash and were rushed, along with the deceased, to Ashmoun General Hospital.
Local media reported that the injured are receiving medical attention, while authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the cause of the collision. Menoufia Governor Ibrahim Abu Leimon confirmed that a team has been assigned to urgently reassess safety protocols on the regional road, which has been the scene of past accidents.
Labor Minister Mohamed Gebran extended condolences to the families of the victims and announced compensation packages for those affected. Families of the deceased will receive 200,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately $4,010), while each injured survivor is set to receive 20,000 pounds (around $400).
“This is a devastating loss. We are doing everything necessary to support the families and investigate the causes of this accident to ensure it does not happen again,” Minister Gebran said in a statement.
Egypt continues to struggle with a high rate of traffic fatalities, largely attributed to speeding, deteriorating road conditions, and inconsistent enforcement of safety regulations. Despite repeated pledges to improve road infrastructure and traffic monitoring, deadly crashes remain all too frequent across the country.
Friday’s crash marks one of the deadliest in recent months and reignites calls for urgent reforms to Egypt’s road safety management.
