Taiwan and Indonesia are set to hold talks on a plan to shift responsibility for Indonesian migrant workers’ airfare and other fees onto Taiwanese employers. The Indonesian government announced the plan in August. Though the plan does have local governments in Indonesia covering certain fees, it puts much of the financial burden involved in hiring Indonesian migrant workers onto employers. In total, employers are expected to pay for eleven items, including airfare, passport fees, visa fees, pre-departure health exams, brokerage firm fees, and lodging costs. The government said this weekend that the public should not blame the migrant worker community for the latest coronavirus outbreak. The latest government report says that the new outbreak cluster is centered around migrant worker dormitories in Samut Sakhon with 90 per cent of the new cases found in workers from Myanmar that are employed in the province’s fishing community. NGOs and labour groups estimate that there are some 200,000-400,000 migrant workers working in Samut Sakhon. Many of them are unregistered. The Government is planning to house asylum seekers in several ‘camps’ without electricity, running water or healthcare, according to a Tory former immigration minister. Hungary violates European Union law by thwarting asylum seekers, the EU’s top court said in another ruling that cuts at the heart of Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s anti-immigrant policy. The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said Sunday it arrested an American man in Cebu who is wanted for a sex crime in the United States. In a statement, Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente identified the suspect as 57-year-old Donald Robert Tyler, whom authorities captured in his residence at Barangay San Roque, Ginatilan, Cebu last Thursday.
