Nigerian superstar and reigning African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has agreed to join Atlético Madrid, turning down a lucrative salary proposal from Turkish giants Fenerbahce, in a move that ends months of uncertainty over his future.
The 28-year-old forward has been seeking an exit from Atalanta after what sources describe as a difficult 18-month period at the Bergamo-based side. Although Lookman had expressed interest in moves to Paris Saint-Germain or Arsenal, negotiations with both clubs failed to materialize into completed transfers.
Atlético Madrid confirmed in a press release that Lookman has already arrived in the Spanish capital, where he is expected to undergo a medical examination before finalizing the terms of his contract.
The transfer marks a significant milestone in Lookman’s career and strengthens Atlético’s attacking options as the club looks to challenge domestically and in Europe.
Lookman also becomes the fourth Nigerian international currently playing in Spain’s top flight, La Liga, following the paths of Akor Adams, Chidera Ejuke and Sadiq Umar.
The move is being widely hailed by Nigerian football fans as a major step for the Super Eagles star, who continues to build an impressive European career.
