Tens of thousands of marchers filled the streets of New Zealand\u2019s capital on Tuesday in what is being hailed as one of the country\u2019s largest demonstrations in support of M\u0101ori rights. The protest centered around a controversial bill seeking to alter the interpretation of the 1840 Treaty of Waitangi, the founding agreement between the Indigenous M\u0101ori people and the British Crown.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The protest, which bore the energy of a festival, was not only about opposing the proposed legislation but also celebrating the resurgence of the M\u0101ori language and identity, nearly destroyed by colonization.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust fighting for the rights that our t\u016bpuna, our ancestors, fought for,\u201d said protester Shanell Bob, using the M\u0101ori word for ancestors. \u201cWe\u2019re fighting for our tamariki, for our mokopuna, so they can have what we haven\u2019t been able to have.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Tradition of Resistance<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The march followed a long history of peaceful M\u0101ori demonstrations that have marked pivotal moments in New Zealand\u2019s history. Starting from the opposite end of Wellington and ending at Parliament, the protest drew support from both M\u0101ori and non-M\u0101ori participants. Many schools allowed students to attend without being marked absent, and the city\u2019s mayor joined the marchers.<\/p>\n

The contentious bill, authored by libertarian lawmaker David Seymour, who is of M\u0101ori descent, proposes redefining the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi to apply universally rather than specifically to M\u0101ori. Critics argue the bill undermines Indigenous rights and risks worsening the inequalities that the treaty was meant to address.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Celebration of Identity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The mood at the protest reflected a shift in New Zealand\u2019s cultural consciousness. Protesters carried placards with messages like \u201cProud to be M\u0101ori\u201d and \u201cRespect the Treaty,\u201d while others criticized the lawmakers behind the bill. M\u0101ori haka (war dances) and waiata (songs) reverberated through the streets as thousands of supporters lined the pavements.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is different from when I was a child,\u201d said Bob. \u201cWe\u2019re stronger now, our tamariki are stronger now. They know who they are and are proud of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flags from various Indigenous and international communities, including those of Samoa, Tonga, Palestine, and Israel, were displayed in solidarity with the M\u0101ori cause.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Divisive Bill<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Seymour\u2019s bill has sparked intense debate. Proponents claim it seeks fairness by preventing \u201cspecial treatment\u201d for M\u0101ori. However, detractors say it risks constitutional upheaval and dilutes Indigenous rights, particularly in light of the historical expropriation of M\u0101ori land and resources.<\/p>\n

Though the bill passed its first parliamentary vote last week, it is unlikely to become law. Seymour remains hopeful for a shift in public opinion and invited submissions from the public. However, his brief appearance at the protest was met with boos from the crowd.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A Call for Unity<\/strong><\/h3>\n

For many M\u0101ori, the protest symbolized a call for respect and acknowledgment of their place in New Zealand\u2019s history and future.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe treaty is a document that lets us be here in Aotearoa, so holding it up and respecting it is really important,\u201d said Ben Ogilvie, a P\u0101keh\u0101 (New Zealand European) supporter.<\/p>\n

As speeches concluded on Parliament grounds, protester Papa Heta summed up the day\u2019s sentiment: \u201cWe hope to unite with our P\u0101keh\u0101 friends. Unfortunately, there are decisions being made that put us in a difficult place.\u201d<\/p>\n
