Country music has\u00a0become a dominant force<\/span>, bleeding into pop music\u2019s mainstream. And artists who might not have been previously associated with the genre\u00a0 like Beyonc\u00e9 and Post Malone\u00a0 have recently released country albums.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve been popular, but their prospects at the Grammys remain uncertain.<\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9’s<\/span>\u00a0landmark \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d recentered Black performers in this music\u2019s history and made her\u00a0the first Black woman<\/span>\u00a0to hit No. 1 on Billboard country albums chart.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Shaboozey\u2019s<\/span> \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy)\u201d is the biggest song of the year, having spent more weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 than any other it combines his twang with the familiar sample of J Kwon\u2019s 2004 rap hit \u201cTipsy.\u201d<\/p>\n

This summer, he followed Beyonc\u00e9 to became only the second Black artist ever to top Billboard\u2019s pop and country singles charts at the same time.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And\u00a0Post Malone<\/span>\u00a0made an effortless transition into the world of country, spending time in Nashville, playing at the Grand Ole Opry, and dominating the charts with \u201cI Had Some Help,\u201d his collaboration with Morgan Wallen.<\/p>\n

For all the success, will these country newcomers be rewarded when the\u00a0Grammy Award<\/a><\/span>\u00a0nominations are announced next week? Here\u2019s some key things to know.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What are the Grammys\u2019 country categories?<\/h3>\n

There are four main Grammy country music categories: best country album, best country solo performance, best country duo\/group performance and best country song. The latter is awarded to the songwriters.<\/p>\n

Each category recognizes five nominated works.<\/p>\n

Who submitted in the country categories?<\/h3>\n

Beyonc\u00e9, Shaboozey and Post Malone have been submitted in all four of the major country music categories, including country album of the year for\u00a0\u201cCowboy Carter,\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u201cWhere I\u2019ve Been, Isn\u2019t Where I\u2019m Going,\u201d and\u00a0\u201cF-1 Trillion,\u201d<\/a><\/span>\u00a0respectively. They are not guaranteed nominations, though each has submitted in several other categories that honor pop, R&B and Americana and are also vying for best album, record and song of the year recognition.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Beyonc\u00e9’s\u00a0\u201cTexas Hold \u2018Em\u201d<\/span>\u00a0has been submitted in the country song category. \u201c16 Carriages\u201d is up for country solo performance and in the country duo\/group performance category, \u201cll Most Wanted,\u201d her duet with\u00a0Miley Cyrus,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0has been submitted.<\/p>\n

In the case of Shaboozey: \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy)\u201d is up for the country song and country solo performance categories. \u201cMy Fault\u201d with Noah Cyrus is up for country duo\/group performance.<\/p>\n

And lastly, for Post Malone: \u201cI Had Some Help\u201d with Wallen is up for country song and country duo\/group performance. \u201cYours\u201d is his submission in the country solo performance category.<\/p>\n

They will likely be up against some of the 2024 Country Music Association Awards\u2019 best country album nominees, which include Luke Combs\u2019 \u201cFathers & Sons,\u201d Cody Johnson\u2019s \u201cLeather,\u201d\u00a0Kacey Musgraves\u2019 \u201cDeeper Well\u201d<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and Chris Stapleton\u2019s \u201cHigher,\u201d as well as the other all-stars who\u2019ve released albums that are eligible for Grammy nomination,\u00a0Lainey Wilson\u2019s \u201cWhirlwind\u201d<\/a><\/span>\u00a0among them.<\/p>\n

Is Beyonc\u00e9 likely to score a Grammy nomination in country categories?<\/h3>\n

Beyonc\u00e9\u00a0received no nominations<\/span>\u00a0for \u201cCowboy Carter\u201d for the 2024 CMAs, a decision\u00a0country star Mickey Guyton<\/span>\u00a0called dispiriting \u2014 and one that might reflect the ways in which the Nashville country music industry operates. Could the same happen at the Grammys?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of times in country music, if you\u2019re releasing a country record, you need to you don\u2019t need to, but it\u2019s beneficial to you to invest in the community and really show yourself in that audience so the community feels an attachment to you,\u201d Guyton said. \u201cNashville is very, very, very it\u2019s a club almost, and it\u2019s a community. And people … feel like they need to know you. And so that was definitely a factor. It still doesn\u2019t make it not disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

If Beyonc\u00e9 receives a best country album Grammy nomination, she will become the second Black artist to do so\u00a0 Guyton was the first, for her 2022 debut, \u201cRemember Her Name.\u201d<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n

Country musician\u00a0BRELAND,<\/span>\u00a0who is both a CMA and Grammy voter, points to the differences between both award shows.<\/p>\n

\u201cNashville in general is a community that, when you come to town, you kind of pay your dues. And I feel like that\u2019s the way that the system runs. That\u2019s how country radio runs,\u201d\u00a0he explained<\/a><\/span>. \u201cYou saw Post Malone really ingratiate himself in the in the community here in Nashville, which I think contributed to him getting some of those looks. You know, Shaboozey was nominated (at the CMAs,) but you also saw him playing CMA fest and playing a bunch of these country festivals.\u201d<\/p>\n

In Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s case, \u201cHer not being here (in Nashville) probably didn\u2019t help her case for getting nominated,\u201d he continued. \u201cShe\u2019s done a really great job in helping to change the narrative in country music, and I would be surprised if she wasn\u2019t acknowledged in some respect at the Grammys. … Grammy voting members are probably going to be a little bit more receptive to that, than people would be on the CMA side.\u201d<\/p>\n

Maura Johnston,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0a freelance music writer and Boston College adjunct instructor, said Beyonc\u00e9 \u201coften is a victim of tall poppy syndrome where she\u2019s so good, she\u2019s so great and so, like, on another level from everybody,\u201d the gut reaction is to \u201chonor something else.\u201d Race is a consideration, too, where Black performers are rarely recognized in country categories.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe should get nominated because it is such an artistic achievement. You know, it is such a way for people to get a very crash course in the history of Americana,\u201d she continues. \u201cBut I also know how country feels about outsiders.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the flip side, Johnston argued that Grammy voters may attempt to course-correct the decision made by the CMAs, and ensure she receives nominations. \u201cIt would be a nice tip of the cap and a nice realization that, yeah, the music business is pretty big, and we have to get rid of the parochialism that can dominate,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

What are Post Malone\u2019s Grammy prospects in country categories?<\/h3>\n

\u201cJust judging by country radio\u2019s reaction to him, I think he might have the best shot of the three,\u201d said Johnston.<\/p>\n

\u201cRadio, it\u2019s such a crucial gatekeeper in the country music industry,\u201d and Malone is playing the game, she says. \u201cThe album … has so many cameos from, like, everybody in country music,\u201d she added. \u201cThe possibility of him getting nominated just by the people he collaborated with is very high.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Those include\u00a0Hank Williams Jr,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Tim McGraw,\u00a0Dolly Parton,<\/a><\/span>\u00a0Combs and Wilson. \u201cI think he has a better shot at receiving a nomination for country album of the year.<\/p>\n

Johnston said she believes that were the inclusion of \u201cI Had Some Help,\u201d which features Morgan Wallen could be a hinderance at the Grammys, where past behaviors such as throwing a chair off a Nashville rooftop<\/span>\u00a0near two police officers and\u00a0using a racial slur<\/span> in a 2021 video mean \u201che is still a bit radioactive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite having some of the biggest songs and albums of the last few years, Wallen has never been nominated for a Grammy. (At February\u2019s show, his single \u201cLast Night\u201d\u00a0was nominated<\/a><\/span> in the best country song category, but did not win. Wallen wouldn\u2019t have received a trophy anyway it is given to the songwriters only.)<\/p>\n

Overall, she sees Malone as a lock from some nomination particularly those that don\u2019t include Wallen.<\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

What are Shaboozey\u2019s Grammy chances?<\/h3>\n

As great as Shaboozey\u2019s album is, it\u2019s much more likely that the country star will be recognized for his massive hit, \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy.)\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt kind of builds on the premise of\u00a0\u2018Old Town Road,\u2019\u201d<\/span>\u00a0says Johnston, pointing to\u00a0Lil Nas X\u2019s<\/a><\/span>\u00a0game changing single.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy)\u201d hit No. 1 on both the country and all-genre charts, she points out. \u201cIt\u2019s a cross-genre moment, and just a good song. It\u2019s also classically country.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

Shaboozey \u201cwas the first male Black artist to chart at No. 1 on country songs and country airplay,\u201d she Johnston said, \u201cSo I think that\u2019s a good sign that, you know, radio embraced him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perhaps the Grammys will do the same.<\/p>\n
