The 2020 election campaign has been marked by the division in US society.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joe Biden has picked up several states.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But Donald Trump’s support held up in numerous areas within those states.<\/p>\n

And Mr Trump’s support increased among groups which have been traditionally seen as being pro-Democrat.<\/p>\n

Here are the key conflict zones which are deciding who will end up in the White House.<\/p>\n

Joe Biden<\/b>\u00a0has already got more votes than any other candidate in history, but that won\u2019t be enough to remove\u00a0Donald Trump<\/b>\u00a0from the White House.<\/p>\n

With votes still being counted, it will come down to the result in\u00a0seven<\/b>\u00a0states which will hand either candidate the keys to the White House.<\/p>\n

Winning back the blue wall of heavily industrial states was essential for\u00a0Mr Biden<\/b>\u00a0to capture the presidency.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

WISCONSIN<\/b>
\nDemocrats increased support in educated and urban areas.
\nIn\u00a0Dane<\/b>\u00a0the second most populous county, half of the population has a degree and almost 9 in 10 live in urban areas. The high number of young and liberal people may explain why Democrats got more than three times the number of votes there.<\/p>\n

The traditionally Republican northeast again backed\u00a0Mr Trump<\/b>, but\u00a0Mr Biden<\/b>\u00a0cut the margin, gaining votes which helped him seal the state-wide vote.<\/p>\n

MICHIGAN<\/b>
\nIn 2016,\u00a0Mr Trump<\/b>\u00a0won by less than 11,000, and the Democrats lost votes to minority parties which got 5.2% of the support. But this time, only 1.8% of the votes have gone to other parties.<\/p>\n

The Democrats have increased their margins in educated, urban and more diverse populations in metropolitan centres, like\u00a0Oakland<\/b>, the second most populous county.<\/p>\n

PENNSYLVANIA<\/b>
\nBefore\u00a0Philadelphia<\/b>\u00a0started counting its postal votes,\u00a0Mr Trump<\/b>\u00a0had a big lead in Pennsylvania.\u00a0Mr Biden<\/b>\u00a0then started to see his vote share rise and rise. Philadelphia\u2019s urban centre is key to pushing him over the finishing line.<\/p>\n

The Democrats held the county where\u00a0Mr Biden<\/b>\u00a0grew up comfortably until\u00a0Trump<\/b>\u00a0cut the margin to 3 points in 2016. The Republican appears to have lost support among non-college educated whites.<\/p>\n

GEORGIA<\/b>
\nState-wide demographic changes have begun to shift politics. In the biggest county, which is urban, where half of the population has a degree and 4 in 10 are African American, Democratic support has increased.
\nPostal ballots in\u00a0Fulton<\/b>\u00a0were mainly responsible for closing the gap.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0Trump<\/b>\u00a0has also expanded his vote share in places like\u00a0Twiggs<\/b>, a county in the Black Belt, which is 100% rural and where only 9% of adults have a degree, helping him close the gap.<\/p>\n

FLORIDA<\/b>
\nLatinos surprised many by supporting Republicans in large numbers.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Miami-Dade<\/b>, the biggest county, was previously safely Democrat, but\u00a0Mr Biden<\/b>\u00a0lost 10 points compared to 2016, costing him many votes and the state.<\/p>\n

ARIZONA<\/b>
\nThe influx of young educated professionals has shifted some of Arizona\u2019s major population centres towards the political left.<\/p>\n

Maricopa<\/b>, the largest county in Arizona, is an example of this demographic change. Republicans used to win Maricopa, but in 2020 it was separated by a whisker. Win here and you generally win the state…<\/p>\n

\u2026but\u00a0Pima County<\/b>\u00a0might add votes to the Democrats.<\/p>\n

NEVADA<\/b>
\nThe key to victory here lies in\u00a0Clark County<\/b>\u00a0where 7 in 10 of the state\u2019s potential electorate live. It contains Las Vegas and has one of the highest unemployment rates in the country.<\/p>\n
