Prince Kofi Amoabeng<\/b>\u00a0(born February 22, 1952) is a\u00a0Ghanaian\u00a0businessman and a former military officer of the\u00a0Ghanaian\u00a0Armed Forces. He was a co-founder of\u00a0UT Bank\u00a0which collapsed in 2017 during\u00a0Ghana’s banking crisis\u00a0amid allegations that he had misappropriated funds from the bank.<\/sup><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup><\/sup>\u00a0He is currently subject to ongoing court battles regarding these allegations following his arrest on 14 January 2020, and release on bail of 110 million cedis.<\/sup><\/sup><\/sup><\/p>\n

Early Life<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amoabeng was born on 22 February 1952 in\u00a0Bososo\u00a0in the\u00a0Eastern Region\u00a0of\u00a0Ghana.<\/p>\n

Education<\/strong><\/p>\n

Amoabeng started his schooling at Penworth Preparatory School, a boarding school in\u00a0Accra. He had his secondary education at the\u00a0St Peter’s Secondary School\u00a0at\u00a0Nkwatia Kwahu\u00a0and\u00a0Adisadel College\u00a0in\u00a0Cape Coast\u00a0Ghana\u00a0before proceeding to the\u00a0University of Ghana for his undergraduate degree. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in administration in 1975 with 2nd-class upper honors from the\u00a0University of Ghana Business School.<\/sup><\/sup> After joining the military, he won a scholarship from the Ministry of Defense to pursue a course at the Royal Army Pay Corps, where he qualified as an accountant within 18 months and decided to return home upon graduation.<\/sup><\/p>\n

Career<\/span><\/h2>\n

Amoabeng began his career in the\u00a0Ghana Armed Forces\u00a0in April, 1975. He was commissioned as a\u00a0lieutenant\u00a0in November 1975.<\/sup><\/p>\n

    Controversies and allegations<\/span><\/h2>\n

    In January 2020, Amoabeng was charged with the embezzlement of a total amount of 59.9 million Ghana cedis from\u00a0UT Bank, having been a cofounder of the bank which collapsed during the\u00a0Ghana banking crisis. <\/sup>The original charges were subsequently dropped and the prosecution intends to bring other charges.<\/p>\n
