In Tunisia<\/strong>, a former environment minister<\/strong> has been sentenced for his role in an illegal<\/strong> import of household waste<\/strong> from Italy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Former minister Mustapha Aroui<\/strong> was dismissed and arrested in December 2020<\/strong> along with other officials.<\/p>\n

The court’s verdict was announced late on Tuesday<\/strong> and reported in the local Tunisian press on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

The former minister, along with three<\/strong> other defendants, was sentenced to three<\/strong> years in prison.<\/p>\n

The case dates back to July 2020<\/strong> when the household waste, the import of which is prohibited by law, was brought to Tunisia in 280<\/strong> containers by a Tunisian company that falsely claimed it was plastic waste for recycling.<\/p>\n

The case provoked protests from the population and local NGOs<\/strong> in Tunisia<\/strong>, who had expressed their refusal to allow their country to become Italy’s<\/strong> “dustbin”.<\/p>\n
