{"id":5123,"date":"2022-12-24T04:17:12","date_gmt":"2022-12-24T04:17:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amnewsworld.com\/?p=5123"},"modified":"2022-12-24T04:17:12","modified_gmt":"2022-12-24T04:17:12","slug":"south-africa-power-cuts-to-continue-into-2023","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnewsworld.com\/fi\/south-africa-power-cuts-to-continue-into-2023\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa: Power cuts to continue into 2023"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content__text article-content__left-column js-responsive-iframes-container\">\n<p>South Africa must prepare for a prolonged electricity crisis, Eskom warned on Friday, as it struggles to power the continent&#8217;s top industrial powerhouse.<\/p>\n<p>The state-owned company promised a Christmas Day reprieve from the unprecedented and prolonged blackouts the country has been suffering for months, attributed to sabotage but mostly to outdated coal-fired power stations, as well as problems of incompetence and outright corruption.<\/p>\n<p>But the first three months of 2023 are going to be &#8220;difficult&#8221;, said Jan Oberholzer, chief operating officer, at a press briefing. &#8220;This period is going to be really complicated&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div id=\"adzone-outstream\" class=\"advertising advertising--no-label js-adzone advertising--outstream advertising--called advertising--rendered advertising--empty-slot\" data-google-query-id=\"CIn2xO-xkfwCFWBOpAQdmcMEgQ\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/6458\/africanews-new\/programs\/news_4__container__\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Electricity comes mainly from coal but also from a 40-year-old nuclear power plant near Cape Town, which will be decommissioned next year for refurbishment work, depriving the grid of valuable megawatts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The outlook for next year is very constrained,&#8221; said outgoing Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa would need between 4,000 and 6,000 MW of additional capacity for the grid, &#8220;it has become a matter of extreme urgency&#8221;, he said. Currently, total energy demand is about 25,000 MW, according to official figures.<\/p>\n<p>De Ruyter, who resigned in mid-December, will remain in office until March.
