Prices had already been increasing because of supply chain problems in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Inflation in the 19 countries of the eurozone soared to 8.1% in May from 7.4% in April, figures showed on Tuesday, exceeding previous expectationions.<\/p>\n<p>Prices have risen sharply in\u00a0the past year, initially because of supply chain problems after the COVID pandemic but subsequently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-lowers-economic-growth-expectations-amid-ukraine-war\/a-61811671\">because of Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How do the figures break down?<\/h2>\n<p>Energy prices jumped jumped by 39.2% as a result of a global\u00a0energy crunch caused by\u00a0the war.<\/p>\n<p>Food prices soared by 7.5%, while prices for other goods \u2014 such as clothing, appliances, cars, computers and books\u00a0\u2014 were up 4.2% and the cost for services rose 3.5%.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/german-inflation-rate-jumps-to-79-in-may\/a-61975217\">Germany&#8217;s inflation rate reached 7.9% in May<\/a>, according to data published on Monday by the German statistical agency Destatis.<\/p>\n<p>Inflation in the eurozone \u2014 home to some 343 million people. \u2014 is now at its highest since records for the currency began in 1997.<\/p>\n<h2>Rise in interest rates on the cards<\/h2>\n<p>To tame price rises, the European Central Bank has already flagged up a 25 basis point increase\u00a0in its minus 0.5% deposit rate in both July and September.<\/p>\n<p>Early in May, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/us-fed-raises-interest-rates-to-tackle-inflation\/a-61686332\">US Federal Reserve raised interest rates<\/a> by half a percentage point for the first time since 2000 in a bid to combat soaring inflation.<\/p>\n<p>That came at the same time the Bank of England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/bank-of-england-raises-interest-rates-to-13-year-high\/a-61694671\">raised its interest rates to a 13-year high<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Fears of an upward\u00a0price spiral<\/h2>\n<p>The latest figures mean headline inflation is now 4 times the ECB&#8217;s 2% target, and there are fears that the rapid rise in underlying prices could see inflation become embedded.<\/p>\n<div class=\"col3 right\">\n<div class=\"standaloneWrap\">\n<div class=\"imgTeaserL video\" data-media-id=\"61983234\">\n<div class=\"mediaItem\" data-media-id=\"61983234\">\n<div class=\"teaserImg\" title=\"Hungarians feel record-high inflation\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col3 right\">\n<div class=\"standaloneWrap\">\n<div class=\"imgTeaserL video\" data-media-id=\"61983234\">\n<div class=\"mediaItem\" data-media-id=\"61983234\">\n<div class=\"teaserImg\" title=\"Hungarians feel record-high inflation\">\n<div class=\"playButtonArea\">\n<div class=\"customPlayBtn\">\n<div class=\"playBtnImgBox\"><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"playBtnText\">Watch video<\/span> <span class=\"right\">02:47<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teaserContentWrap information\">\n<h2>Hungarians feel record-high inflation<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>That means prices would continue to spiral\u00a0as prices and wages become locked into a pattern of mutual escalation.<\/p>\n<p>The release of the figures coincided with data showing that France&#8217;s economy shrank in the first quarter.<\/p>\n<p>An EU decision on Monday\u00a0to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/eu-leaders-hail-solidarity-in-compromise-on-russia-oil-ban-after-summit\/a-61971978\">immediately halt two-thirds of Russia&#8217;s oil exports<\/a> to the bloc could put still more upward pressure on prices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AMN\/News Report\/Business.<\/strong><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Inflation in the eurozone has hit another record high, as the war in Ukraine stokes energy and food prices.
