NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg discussed the critical security situation in Europe caused by Russia\u2019s military build-up in and around Ukraine and the implications for European and international security in a series of bilateral meetings at the Munich Security Conference on Friday and Saturday (18-19 February 2022).<\/p>\n
Meeting with\u00a0US Vice President Kamala Harris, the Secretary General stressed the importance of strong transatlantic relations and thanked the United States for its\u00a0significant contributions to the Alliance.<\/p>\n
He also discussed transatlantic relations, NATO\u2019s adaptation and progress in burden-sharing with\u00a0the Speaker of the US House of Representatives Senator Nancy Pelosi and a US\u00a0Congressional Delegation\u00a0led by Senator Lindsey Graham.<\/p>\n
In talks with\u00a0German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the Secretary General\u00a0praised Germany for its leading role in NATO and recent contributions to strengthen the Alliance\u2019s deterrence and defence in Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n
Russia\u2019s unprovoked military build-up in and around Ukraine\u00a0was\u00a0also high\u00a0on the agenda\u00a0during the Secretary General\u2019s meetings with Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda and Estonian President Kaja Kallas.\u00a0The Secretary General\u00a0thanked both leaders for their contributions to NATO and for hosting defensive NATO battlegroups in the eastern part of the Alliance. Meeting with Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, the Secretary General praised Canada for its significant support to Ukraine and for leading a NATO battlegroup in Latvia.<\/p>\n
The Secretary General also met with Australian foreign minister Marise Payne, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Patricia Espinosa.<\/p>\n
On Saturday, the Secretary General addressed the Munich Security Conference and delivered a keynote speech on the importance of a strong transatlantic bond for European security. Mr. Stoltenberg was awarded the Munich Security Conference\u2019s Ewald von Kleist award. The Secretary General also addressed the American-German Chamber of Commerce, where he received the 30th Transatlantic Partnership Award on behalf of NATO.<\/p>\n
