The 2026 Dakar Youth Olympic Games have delivered a series of outstanding performances and historic achievements as the first week of competition draws to a close, with China leading the medal standings and African nations making their mark on the international stage.

China currently sits at the top of the medal table with nine gold, three silver and two bronze medals, giving it 14 medals overall. Japan follows closely in second place with eight gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

Egypt is the highest-ranked African country, occupying fourth position with four gold medals and five medals in total. South Africa has also made a strong start, winning one gold, three silver and one bronze.

Some of the most significant moments for Africa have come from the women’s rugby sevens competition.

Kenya made history by becoming the first African nation to win the women’s rugby sevens tournament at the Youth Olympic Games. The achievement represents a major milestone for Kenyan rugby and African representation in the sport.

Madagascar also celebrated a landmark moment, securing its first-ever Olympic medal after claiming bronze in the same competition.

The two achievements have added to the excitement surrounding the Games, which are providing young African athletes with an opportunity to compete and make history on a global sporting stage.

Japan’s 17-year-old swimmer Mana Ishikawa has emerged as one of the biggest stars of the opening week.

Ishikawa won four individual gold medals, becoming the first athlete in Youth Olympic Games history to achieve the feat. Her victories came in the women’s 200-metre breaststroke, 100-metre breaststroke, 200-metre individual medley and 50-metre breaststroke.

Her remarkable performance has earned her recognition as one of the standout athletes of the competition and strengthened Japan’s position among the leading medal-winning nations.

Despite hosting the historic sporting event, Senegal is still waiting to add to its medal tally after securing a bronze medal in judo.

The Games are particularly significant for the country and the continent, as Dakar 2026 marks the first time an Olympic sporting event has been hosted on African soil.

The competition has brought together thousands of young athletes from around the world, offering Senegal an opportunity to showcase its sporting facilities, culture and capacity to host a major international event.

With the second week approaching, attention will remain on the medal race, Africa’s emerging sporting talents and the possibility of further historic achievements before the Games conclude.
