Ella Langley\u2019s country hit \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d has made music history after becoming the longest-running No. 1 song in the United States.<\/p>\n
The midtempo heartbreak song has spent 23 weeks at the top of the all-genre Billboard Hot 100, surpassing the previous record of 22 weeks held by Mariah Carey\u2019s Christmas classic \u201cAll I Want for Christmas Is You.\u201d<\/p>\n
The milestone, announced Tuesday, places Langley\u2019s song ahead of several major chart records, including those set by Shaboozey\u2019s \u201cA Bar Song (Tipsy),\u201d Lil Nas X\u2019s \u201cOld Town Road\u201d and Whitney Houston\u2019s \u201cI Will Always Love You.\u201d<\/p>\n
Released last October, \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d has become one of the defining songs of 2026, despite its relatively relaxed sound and unconventional approach to a mainstream No. 1 hit.<\/p>\n
The song\u2019s success has extended well beyond traditional country music audiences.<\/p>\n
According to music industry data and analytics company Luminate, \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d had generated about 911 million on-demand streams in the United States and 1.26 billion globally by mid-August.<\/p>\n
Langley\u2019s growth has also been striking. Around the time of her Grand Ole Opry debut in 2023, she had fewer than 1 million monthly Spotify listeners. She now has more than 32 million monthly listeners, reflecting the rapid expansion of her audience.<\/p>\n
The growth also reflects broader changes in how country music reaches listeners.<\/p>\n
While country music has historically depended heavily on radio, streaming has become increasingly important, particularly among younger listeners. Luminate executive Jaime Marconette described the trend as a \u201cmultiyear narrative\u201d that has been accelerated by songs such as \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n
Spotify senior editor Claire Heinichen said the song initially gained momentum through the platform\u2019s leading country playlist, Hot Country, before spreading into broader playlists.<\/p>\n
The track eventually appeared on Today\u2019s Top Hits, Spotify\u2019s major global playlist, as well as playlists built around moods and activities such as driving, relaxing and social gatherings.<\/p>\n
Music experts say the song\u2019s unusual combination of sounds has helped it reach listeners beyond the traditional country audience.<\/p>\n
Musicologist Nate Sloan described Langley\u2019s voice as distinctive and compared its effect to something \u201clike syrup,\u201d noting the singer\u2019s long vocal phrases and the song\u2019s hypnotic rhythm.<\/p>\n
The track combines elements of country with rock, soul and disco-influenced sounds, creating a production that remains recognizably country while avoiding some of the stylistic features that can limit crossover appeal.<\/p>\n
Charles L. Hughes, a Rhodes College professor and author of Country Soul<\/em>, said the song draws from earlier eras of country music while incorporating contemporary influences.<\/p>\n The track’s musical character has been compared with the late-1970s and early-1980s period when artists such as Ronnie Milsap, Barbara Mandrell and Charlie Rich incorporated R&B and pop influences into country music.<\/p>\n At the same time, Langley\u2019s songwriting reflects more contemporary country influences associated with artists including Kacey Musgraves and Miranda Lambert.<\/p>\n The song\u2019s lyrics focus on a familiar country music theme: heartbreak.<\/p>\n Langley portrays a woman losing her partner to another woman and ultimately accepting that she cannot change his decision.<\/p>\n The story uses Texas and Tennessee as part of its central imagery, with the narrator drinking Tennessee whiskey as her partner chooses Texas and another woman.<\/p>\n Musicologist Sloan said the song combines sadness with humor and a degree of emotional distance, a characteristic often associated with the \u201csad banger\u201d phenomenon in popular music.<\/p>\n Its detailed references also help distinguish it from more generic pop hits. The lyrics mention George Strait\u2019s \u201cAmarillo by Morning\u201d and use specific geographical and cultural references rather than relying solely on broad romantic themes.<\/p>\n Despite its massive success, \u201cChoosin\u2019 Texas\u201d does not fit some of the traditional characteristics associated with a major pop chart blockbuster.<\/p>\n The song is relatively restrained rather than explosive, with no dramatic anthem-like climax. Its appeal instead comes from its melody, steel guitar, subtle dance pulse and Langley\u2019s vocal delivery.<\/p>\n That combination has allowed the song to occupy a space between traditional country and mainstream pop.<\/p>\n Its record-breaking run also comes at a time when several of the biggest names in global music, including Taylor Swift, Morgan Wallen and Bad Bunny, have not released new albums this year.<\/p>\n For Hughes, however, the song\u2019s success reflects more than an opening in the music market.
