New buildings are rising, businesses are expanding, roads are being constructed and private developers are investing heavily in homes and commercial properties.

But beneath the visible signs of construction lies a difficult question: Is the region truly developing, or is it simply building more while planning less?

That question is at the heart of a growing debate about urban planning, sanitation, environmental protection and the kind of Ashanti Region the present generation will leave for those who come after it.

In older parts of Kumasi, including Ash-Town, Asafo, Bantama and Asokwa, remnants of earlier urban development offer an opportunity to examine how previous generations approached community planning.

Supporters of this view argue that many of the region’s earlier communities were designed with greater attention to the relationship between homes, roads, drainage, sanitation and the surrounding environment.

Their generation did not have access to today’s sophisticated architectural software, modern construction equipment, extensive engineering institutions or the enormous volume of global information available through digital technology.

Yet they found practical ways to address the challenges of their time.

Among the examples often cited are drainage systems, sanitation arrangements and the development of the Kumasi Ventilated Improved Pit (KVIP), alongside building practices that were adapted to local climatic and environmental conditions.

The argument is not that everything built in the past was superior, but that earlier generations understood an important principle: a city must be planned, not merely filled with buildings.

Construction Is Not Necessarily Development

The rapid expansion of the region has also brought significant challenges.

Congested streets, inadequate sanitation, unplanned settlements, blocked drains and construction close to roads and waterways have become concerns in many growing communities.

Critics argue that some modern developments appear to focus heavily on individual properties without sufficient consideration for the wider urban environment.

A multimillion-cedi house, for example, may be impressive on its own, but its contribution to development becomes questionable if it is surrounded by poor sanitation or lacks adequate drainage.

Similarly, a city filled with concrete structures cannot automatically be described as a well-developed city if its infrastructure and environmental systems cannot cope with population growth.

The distinction is therefore between construction and sustainable development.

Development involves proper planning, functioning drainage systems, clean communities, effective sanitation, sound architecture, environmental protection and the preservation of cultural heritage.

The Environmental Question

Perhaps the most difficult issue concerns the region’s natural resources.

Ashanti has long been associated with gold mining and remains one of Ghana’s important mineral-producing areas. But illegal and irresponsible mining practices have raised serious concerns about the destruction and pollution of rivers and other water bodies.

This creates an uncomfortable contradiction.

A region blessed with mineral wealth must also protect the environmental resources that sustain its communities.

The question is not whether Ashanti should benefit from its natural resources, but whether those resources can be exploited without leaving degraded rivers, damaged land and environmental problems for future generations.

With today’s access to universities, professional engineers, architects, urban planners, researchers, technology and financial resources, the argument goes, there should be fewer excuses for poorly planned development.

What Will We Leave Behind?

The present generation has advantages that previous generations could only have imagined.

There are better-trained professionals, universities and research institutions, modern construction technologies, government agencies, private developers with substantial capital and an Ashanti diaspora with expertise and resources around the world.

The challenge, therefore, is increasingly one of responsibility and discipline.

Blaming colonialism, central government or previous generations cannot permanently substitute for local responsibility.

At some point, residents, traditional authorities, professionals, businesses, developers and political leaders must confront the question of what kind of region they are collectively creating.

Future generations will not judge today’s leaders and citizens solely by political arguments or social-media victories.

They will ask what was inherited, what was improved, what was destroyed and what was left for them.

That is why the debate over Ashanti’s future must go beyond the number of buildings constructed or the amount of money invested in property.

A new building is not automatically development.

A beautiful structure without proper drainage is not necessarily development.

A prosperous community surrounded by poor sanitation cannot claim sustainable progress.

And extracting natural resources while destroying the environment cannot be considered responsible development.

A Challenge to the Present Generation

The central challenge is therefore not whether modern Ashanti is building more than its ancestors.

It is whether the region is building better.

Previous generations may have had fewer financial resources and less technology, but they demonstrated ingenuity in solving problems with what was available to them.

Today’s generation has considerably more knowledge, technology and resources.

The responsibility is to use those advantages to create communities that are cleaner, better planned, environmentally responsible and worthy of inheritance.

The uncomfortable question remains:

If our ancestors could accomplish so much with so little, why are we struggling to do better with so much?

For Ashanti, the answer cannot simply be more construction.

It must be better planning, stronger environmental stewardship, improved sanitation, functioning infrastructure, protection of rivers and heritage, and a willingness to think beyond the needs of the present.

The next generation will inherit the consequences of today’s decisions.

Ashanti must do better, and the time to begin is now.

The Ashanti Region is changing rapidly.
