Shares of Japan’s SoftBank Group, a major investor in OpenAI, plunged 10.7% in Monday trading.<\/p>\n
Investment research analyst Dan Baker of Morningstar said the decline likely reflected concerns that regulators could slow AI development to prevent potentially dangerous outcomes.<\/p>\n
The impact extended beyond SoftBank, with several major technology and semiconductor companies recording losses.<\/p>\n
South Korea’s SK Hynix fell 6.4%, while Samsung Electronics dropped 4.1%.<\/p>\n
In Japan, Tokyo Electron declined 1%, while Kioxia Holdings fell 6.4%.<\/p>\n
Taiwan’s benchmark Taiex lost 0.7%, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., one of the world’s leading AI chip manufacturers, falling 1.2%.<\/p>\n
The market reaction followed comments by Altman backing Amodei’s call for greater caution in AI development.<\/p>\n
Altman also said his company would not pursue an initial public offering this year as it continues to focus on safety and development.<\/p>\n
Although OpenAI and Anthropic remain privately held companies, investors expect both companies to eventually become publicly traded, increasing attention on how regulation and safety concerns could affect their growth.<\/p>\n
While technology shares weakened, oil prices moved sharply higher as geopolitical tensions threatened global energy supplies.<\/p>\n
Brent crude, the international benchmark, rose 2.6% to $107.28 per barrel, while U.S. benchmark crude gained 2.5% to $102.57 per barrel.<\/p>\n
Oil had been trading at approximately $72 per barrel before the outbreak of the Iran war in late February.<\/p>\n
The latest increase came after Saudi Arabia shut down a major oil pipeline used to bypass the Strait of Hormuz following an attack.<\/p>\n

Markets are also closely watching this week’s Federal Reserve meeting as policymakers consider their response to persistent inflation.<\/p>\n
Inflationary pressures have increased amid the energy shock associated with the Iran war, while rising U.S. government debt has added to concerns in financial markets.<\/p>\n
The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury stood at 4.96%, slightly above the 4.95% recorded last Thursday.<\/p>\n
Higher energy prices could make it more difficult for central banks to bring inflation back toward their targets, potentially complicating decisions over interest rates.<\/p>\n
Despite Monday’s weakness, U.S. stocks ended last week on a stronger note.<\/p>\n
