Finland has completed a 200-kilometre barrier fence along its border with Russia, marking the completion of a major security project designed to strengthen surveillance, deter unauthorised crossings and improve the country’s ability to respond to irregular migration.<\/p>\n
The Finnish Border Guard announced the completion of the project on Monday at an event in Nuijamaa, near the Russian border in south-eastern Finland.<\/p>\n
The barrier covers selected sections of Finland’s 1,340-kilometre eastern border with Russia. It consists of a 4.5-metre-high fence, technical surveillance equipment, patrol roads and a 25-metre-wide cleared strip.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the fence was constructed in areas identified through security assessments as having the greatest operational need and where the investment was considered cost-effective.<\/p>\n
The Finnish Border Guard said the project cost approximately \u20ac356 million, coming in \u20ac22 million below its original budget.<\/p>\n
Interior Minister Mari Rantanen said the new infrastructure forms part of Finland’s wider border surveillance system and contributes to the security of the European Union’s external frontier.<\/p>\n
“The state’s most important duty is to see to the safety of its nationals,” Rantanen said during the completion ceremony.<\/p>\n
Finland shares the EU and NATO’s longest border with Russia, making the eastern frontier an important component of European security planning.<\/p>\n
The decision to construct the barrier followed a cross-party agreement in 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine heightened concerns over security and potential hybrid threats along Finland’s eastern frontier.<\/p>\n
Construction began with pilot sections in Imatra and Salla in 2023, before large-scale work started in Nuijamaa in August 2024.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Finnish Border Guard Markku Hassinen said the completed infrastructure would improve patrol mobility, situational awareness and authorities’ ability to respond to large-scale irregular migration.<\/p>\n
Finland closed its eastern border crossing points in late 2023 after accusing Russia of directing asylum seekers towards the frontier. Moscow has denied the allegation.<\/p>\n
The fence project comes amid continued debate over Finland’s approach to migration and border security.<\/p>\n
The Finnish government has proposed extending its controversial Border Security Act for another two years. The legislation is intended to address situations in which authorities believe migration is being deliberately used as a tool to exert political pressure.<\/p>\n
Critics have raised concerns about the law’s compatibility with Finland’s constitution, European Union law and international obligations concerning human rights and refugees.<\/p>\n
The construction project involved hundreds of companies and required a substantial workforce.<\/p>\n
The Border Guard said as many as 600 workers and 150 machines were operating at construction sites during the busiest periods.<\/p>\n
Approximately 1,000 landowners were also involved in the project.<\/p>\n
Finnish authorities say the completed barrier will provide an additional layer of protection along vulnerable sections of the country’s eastern frontier, while surveillance technology and patrol infrastructure will allow border officials to monitor and respond to developments more effectively.<\/p>\n
