A high-level delegation from the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has arrived in Haiti as regional leaders step up efforts to restore security, strengthen state institutions and create conditions for presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December.<\/p>\n
The joint delegation, led by OAS Secretary-General Albert R. Ramdin and CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, held talks Monday with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aim\u00e9 and senior government officials.<\/p>\n
The visit comes as Haiti continues to struggle with widespread gang violence that has weakened state authority and allowed armed groups to expand their control in several parts of the country.<\/p>\n
During their meetings, Haitian officials and the regional delegation signed agreements aimed at strengthening the involvement of international partners and non-governmental organisations supporting efforts to combat gang violence and assist affected communities.<\/p>\n
The discussions focused on improving coordination among Haitian authorities, regional organisations and international partners working to restore security and protect civilians.<\/p>\n
The delegation also met senior officials from the Haitian National Police and international security partners to discuss measures aimed at restoring government control and improving protection for communities affected by violence.<\/p>\n
With Haiti scheduled to hold presidential and legislative elections on December 13, 2026, the delegation also met members of the country’s Provisional Electoral Council to assess preparations for the electoral process.<\/p>\n
Security remains one of the biggest challenges facing the planned elections, with authorities under pressure to ensure that voters, candidates and election officials can participate safely.<\/p>\n
Regional officials are seeking to support preparations while helping Haitian institutions build the capacity needed to conduct a credible electoral process.<\/p>\n
The OAS said the delegation’s visit comes at a critical point for Haiti as the country attempts to address its prolonged political, security and humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n
Ramdin said the joint mission is intended to improve coordination and deliver tangible progress across several areas, including security, elections, institutional development, humanitarian assistance and long-term development.<\/p>\n
The involvement of both the OAS and CARICOM reflects growing regional efforts to help Haiti rebuild state institutions and create conditions for a return to democratic governance.<\/p>\n
For Haiti, however, the success of the electoral timetable will largely depend on whether authorities and their international partners can make sufficient progress in containing armed gangs and restoring security before voters head to the polls.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
