Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has secured the Democratic nomination for the U.S. Senate in Maine, setting up a closely watched November contest against five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a race that could play a pivotal role in determining control of the U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n
Jackson was selected during a special Democratic nominating convention on Saturday after former nominee Graham Platner withdrew from the race earlier this month following allegations of sexual assault, which he has denied.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of Democratic delegates gathered in Bangor, Maine, to choose a replacement nominee under a state law requiring the party to name a new candidate ahead of the November 3 election.<\/p>\n
Jackson dominated the convention, winning 566 of the 571 delegate votes cast after emerging as the clear favorite in the days leading up to the vote.<\/p>\n
Addressing delegates after his victory, Jackson called for unity and grassroots action.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWhen the people in power refuse to listen, you have to organize, you have to stand in solidarity, together. And you have to make them listen,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Democrats See Maine as Key Senate Battleground<\/h3>\n
National Democrats view Maine as one of their best opportunities to flip a Republican-held Senate seat in November, making the race one of the most closely watched contests of the election cycle.<\/p>\n
However, Jackson faces significant challenges.<\/p>\n
Collins, who has represented Maine in the Senate for five terms, enters the race with a substantial fundraising advantage. Federal campaign filings show she has raised more than $16 million, while Jackson’s campaign says it has raised just over $1 million since he entered the Senate race.<\/p>\n
Republicans also moved quickly to define Jackson, with the Senate Leadership Fund announcing plans to spend more than $42 million opposing his campaign.<\/p>\n
“Mainers value steady leadership that yields real results for the Pine Tree State, making Susan Collins the clear choice once again this November,” said Chris Gustafson, communications director for the Republican super PAC.<\/p>\n
Progressive Credentials<\/h3>\n
Jackson, a fifth-generation logger from northern Maine, has long been associated with the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n
He supports policies including Medicare for All and has called for abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). He previously managed Maine operations for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign and has received support from Sanders’ political organization, Our Revolution.<\/p>\n
Jackson first sought elected office as a Republican in 2000 before later serving as an independent and eventually joining the Democratic Party in 2004. He went on to become President of the Maine Senate before leaving office in 2024.<\/p>\n
Collins Questions Jackson’s Political Views<\/h3>\n
Collins has already begun drawing ideological contrasts ahead of the general election.<\/p>\n
The Republican senator recently described Jackson as aligned with democratic socialism, noting his long association with Sanders.<\/p>\n
“He’s a Bernie Bro,” Collins said, arguing Jackson’s political positions are too liberal for many Maine voters.<\/p>\n
Race Could Shape Senate Control<\/h3>\n
The Maine contest is expected to be one of the most competitive Senate races in the country.<\/p>\n
Democrats need to gain several Republican-held seats while defending vulnerable incumbents if they hope to reclaim control of the Senate. Political analysts believe a Democratic victory in Maine could prove critical to those efforts.<\/p>\n
Jackson expressed confidence that his campaign can overcome the odds despite entering the race late.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe’re not from the left, we’re not from the right. We’re from the bottom, and we are rising,\u201d he told supporters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
