A punishing heatwave sweeping across Europe has left millions exposed to dangerous temperatures, with authorities warning of rising health risks as the extreme weather pushes deeper into the continent.<\/p>\n
Forecasts showed that at least 101 million people across Europe were expected to face temperatures above 35 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while more than 380 million were projected to experience temperatures exceeding 30C. France, Spain, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom were among the countries hardest hit, with emergency services on alert as the human toll of the heat continued to mount.<\/p>\n
In France, most of the mainland remained under extreme heat warnings, with around 63 million people facing temperatures above 30C. Authorities said three deaths in the northern Pas-de-Calais region were likely linked to the heat. In the suburbs of Paris, a three-year-old boy was found dead after climbing into his family\u2019s unlocked car while he was supposed to be napping. Two other children have also died in similar circumstances this week.<\/p>\n
Spain has also begun counting the cost of the heat. The country\u2019s MoMo mortality monitoring system said 212 deaths recorded between Sunday and Wednesday could be linked to the soaring temperatures. Spanish authorities have already logged new June temperature records as the heatwave tightened its grip.<\/p>\n
Climate experts say the scale and severity of the event reflect a broader pattern of worsening extreme weather driven by global warming. UN climate chief Simon Stiell said the heatwave bore \u201cthe fingerprints of the climate crisis,\u201d warning that fossil fuel pollution continues to intensify such events. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of the EU\u2019s Copernicus Climate Change Service, said a \u201cheat dome\u201d carrying trapped hot air from North Africa had driven temperatures upward, while climate change was making such heatwaves more severe and more likely to break records.<\/p>\n
Temperatures above 30C were also forecast for around 70 million people in Germany, 48 million in Italy and 38 million in the United Kingdom, with Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands also enduring unusually intense heat. While western Europe is expected to see some relief from Friday, eastern parts of the continent remained on red alert as the heat is forecast to continue into the weekend.<\/p>\n
Across Europe, people sought relief where they could. In Paris, residents and families spent the night in parks and along canals, while authorities opened some public swimming areas to help people cool down. In Brussels, residents complained about the shortage of public swimming facilities as temperatures neared 40C. In Germany, several outdoor events were cancelled and rail operator Deutsche Bahn warned of travel disruptions linked to wildfires, thunderstorms and heat-related damage to infrastructure.<\/p>\n
Health workers have warned that the most vulnerable including the elderly, young children and people with underlying medical conditions face the greatest risk. Care home staff in parts of the UK said dehydration remained a serious concern for dementia patients who may not recognize when they need water.<\/p>\n
The latest heatwave comes after more than 200,000 people across Europe died from heat-related causes over the last four years, underlining growing concern over the continent\u2019s ability to cope with more frequent and more intense summer extremes.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
