Authorities in Nigeria’s northeastern Borno State have announced that nearly 10,000 former Boko Haram fighters have been reintegrated into society through a government-backed rehabilitation and de-radicalisation program aimed at encouraging insurgents to abandon armed groups and return to civilian life.<\/p>\n
The announcement was made during a graduation ceremony in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, where 720 former militants completed rehabilitation training and were formally discharged from a reintegration center.<\/p>\n
According to state officials, the latest graduates bring the total number of former insurgents reintegrated into communities across the region to 9,680.<\/p>\n
The program is part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to weaken extremist groups operating in the Lake Chad Basin by providing pathways for fighters willing to surrender. During the ceremony, participants took an oath before government officials and community representatives as they prepared to return to civilian life.<\/p>\n
Borno State authorities described rehabilitation and reintegration efforts as a key component of long-term peacebuilding initiatives in northeastern Nigeria, where communities have endured years of violence linked to insurgent activities.<\/p>\n
Boko Haram’s insurgency, which began more than a decade ago, has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands of people and displaced millions across Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger. The conflict has also devastated local economies and strained humanitarian resources throughout the region.<\/p>\n
Although Nigerian military operations have significantly reduced the territorial control once held by Boko Haram, armed factions continue to launch attacks in parts of northeastern Nigeria and neighboring countries around Lake Chad.<\/p>\n
Officials said the rehabilitation program seeks to address the root causes of extremism by offering former fighters counselling, education, vocational training and support aimed at helping them reintegrate into society.<\/p>\n
Authorities maintain that combining military operations with rehabilitation initiatives is essential to ending the insurgency and promoting lasting stability in communities affected by years of conflict.<\/p>\n
