Beijing has said it will sanction several EU officials, including parliamentarians, for “harming” China’s sovereignty. The EU, the US, the UK and Canada all slapped sanctions on Beijing for abuses in Xinjiang.<\/strong><\/p>\n

China on Monday said it had decided to impose sanctions on 10 European Union citizens, including politicians,\u00a0for “gross\u00a0interference”\u00a0in its internal affairs,\u00a0and for “flagrantly violating\u00a0international law.”<\/p>\n

In a statement,\u00a0China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced it would endorse sanctions against the individuals and four EU entities for “maliciously spreading lies and false information.”<\/p>\n

On the list of individuals to be sanctioned are five members of the EU parliament \u2014\u00a0Reinhard Butikofer,\u00a0Michael Gahler, Raphael Glucksmann, Ilhan Kyuchyuk and Miriam Lexmann\u00a0\u2014 EU human rights and security committee members, and Adrian Zenz, a US-based\u00a0German scholar who has published reports of abuse against minorities in Tibet and Xinjiang.<\/p>\n

Beijing said it will also sanction EU entities including\u00a0Germany’s Mercator Institute for China Studies and a Danish democracy organization.<\/p>\n

China’s foreign ministry says all\u00a0relevant personnel and their family members will be prohibited from entering mainland\u00a0China, as well as\u00a0the Special Administrative Regions of\u00a0Hong Kong and Macao, adding that their affiliated companies and institutions have also been restricted from communicating with China.<\/p>\n

EU, US, UK, Canada\u00a0move\u00a0against China over\u00a0Uyghurs<\/h4>\n

The move comes shortly after the EU agreed to\u00a0sanction China for human rights abuses\u00a0against the Uyghurs at a\u00a0foreign ministers meeting earlier on Monday in Brussels.<\/p>\n

Four regional and party representatives, as well as a construction firm\u00a0from Xinjiang province, were added to the EU sanctions list, with their names\u00a0published in the EU Official Journal.<\/p>\n

The EU has not issued punitive sanctions on China for human rights abuses since the\u00a0Tiananmen\u00a0Square massacre in 1989.<\/p>\n

Brussels imposed travel bans and asset freezes on Chen Mingguo, director of the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau, as well as senior Chinese officials\u00a0Wang Mingshan and Wang Junzheng. The former head of China’s Xinjiang region, Zhu Hailun, was also targeted.<\/p>\n

The construction\u00a0company hit with sanctions was\u00a0the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps Public Security Bureau.<\/p>\n

Later on Monday, the US also said it would sanction\u00a0Wang Junzheng and\u00a0Chen Mingguo.<\/p>\n

US State Secretary Antony Blinken said the two committed “appalling abuses in Xinjiang.”<\/p>\n

He also accused Beijing of committing “genocide and crimes against humanity” in the province and called on china to release “all those arbitrarily held in internment camps and detention facilities.”<\/p>\n

UK also announced sanctions for what they described as “industrial-scale abuses” in Xinjiang, while Canada issued similar measures on four Chinese officials and one entity.<\/p>\n

The EU is\u00a0also set to sanction several individuals and entities from North Korea, Russia, Libya, Eritrea and South Sudan.<\/p>\n

Eleven individuals involved in Myanmar’s military coup and the repression of demonstrators there\u00a0were also hit with restrictive measures.<\/p>\n

Why would the EU impose\u00a0sanctions on China?<\/h4>\n

In the last few years, hundreds of Uyghurs, as well as other ethnic minorities in China such as Kazakhs and Huis have testified about being held in internment camps.<\/p>\n

Observers say such facilities are\u00a0part of a government campaign to forcibly assimilate ethnic minorities, sometimes using torture and forced labor. Mass rapes and the forced sterilization of women are also alleged to have taken place in the camps.<\/p>\n

Beijing says the camps \u2014 which are estimated to have held more than 1 million people since 2017 \u2014\u00a0are “vocational education centers” to prevent extremism and terrorism.<\/p>\n
