{"id":136,"date":"2020-11-09T17:44:47","date_gmt":"2020-11-09T17:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/amnewsworld.com\/?p=136"},"modified":"2025-05-04T02:57:31","modified_gmt":"2025-05-04T02:57:31","slug":"coronavirus-vaccine-hopes-spark-global-stock-market-surge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.amnewsworld.com\/fi\/coronavirus-vaccine-hopes-spark-global-stock-market-surge\/","title":{"rendered":"Coronavirus vaccine hopes spark global stock market surge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The FTSE 100 and other global stock markets have rallied sharply on growing hopes of a coronavirus vaccine &#8211; building on gains in reaction to Joe Biden&#8217;s US election victory.<\/p>\n<p>The FTSE hit its highest level since August after US drug firm Pfizer announced that early data from phase three trials showed\u00a0<strong>its vaccine<\/strong>\u00a0was more than 90% effective against\u00a0<strong>COVID-19<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-site-outbrain sdc-site-outbrain--AR_6\">\n<div id=\"outbrain_widget_0\" class=\"OUTBRAIN\" data-src=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/us-election-results-markets-rally-after-biden-victory-confirmed-12128230\" data-widget-id=\"AR_6\" data-ob-template=\"bskyb\" data-ob-mark=\"true\" data-browser=\"chrome\" data-os=\"win32\" data-dynload=\"\" data-idx=\"0\">\n<div class=\"ob-widget ob-strip-layout AR_6\" data-dynamic-truncate=\"true\">\n<div class=\"ob-pixels\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It followed overnight gains in Asia, where Japan&#8217;s Nikkei hit a 29-year high, after the confirmation of the US election result over the weekend which also bolstered values across Europe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-custom-markup\" data-component-name=\"sdc-article-custom-markup\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>:: Subscribe to Divided States on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/gb\/podcast\/divided-states\/id1488434518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple podcasts<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.google.com\/?feed=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc3ByZWFrZXIuY29tL3Nob3cvNDEzOTYxNS9lcGlzb2Rlcy9mZWVk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Podcasts<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/show\/7nBcCiQRNzLsgMdj6UqVGw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spotify<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spreaker.com\/show\/divided-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Spreaker<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FTSE closed 276 points or 4.7% up at 6,186 while the CAC in Paris was more than 7% higher &#8211; both coming off the boil slightly late in Monday&#8217;s session.<\/p>\n<p>In New York, the S&amp;P 500 opened in record territory in reaction to the vaccine developments.<\/p>\n<p>The update on the Pfizer-BioNTech trial raises hopes that economic damage from the coronavirus crisis can be limited if populations can be widely protected.<\/p>\n<p>However many tech stocks, which have hit record values this year as more people work and shop from home, were damaged.<\/p>\n<p>Shares in video call operator Zoom, for example, were down 18% at the open with the wider tech-focused Nasdaq just 1% higher.<\/p>\n<p>In the FTSE&#8217;s case, airline and energy stocks were the\u00a0<strong>big winners<\/strong>\u00a0while Ocado shares were almost 12% lower.<\/p>\n<p>It marked its biggest daily surge for the FTSE 100 since March with \u00a370bn added to the collective market value of its constituent companies. However, it remains 18% down on where it started the year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/11\/768x432\/skynews-ftse-100-chart_5167013.jpg?bypass-service-worker&amp;20201109162707\" alt=\"The FTSE 100 has struggled to recover from steep COVID losses in February\" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"sdc-article-image__caption\"><em><span class=\"sdc-article-image__caption-text\">The FTSE 100 has struggled to recover from steep COVID losses in February<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Pfizer rival AstraZeneca is the most valuable company on the index.<\/p>\n<p>Its shares lost 2% while Pfizer&#8217;s were 8% ahead in the US.<\/p>\n<p>The domestically-focused FTSE 250 closed 5.2% higher.<\/p>\n<p>Commodities also spurted with copper costs surging 29% while a barrel of Brent crude oil was 8% up.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Biden&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>defeat of Donald Trump<\/strong>\u00a0contributed as it eased investor fears about a continuation of a damaging trade war between the US and China, the world&#8217;s two biggest economies.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-tweet\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-tweet__inner\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-tweet__content\">\n<div class=\"twitter-tweet twitter-tweet-rendered\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Trump said of Pfizer&#8217;s announcement via Twitter: &#8220;STOCK MARKET UP BIG, VACCINE COMING SOON. REPORT 90% EFFECTIVE. SUCH GREAT NEWS!&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Neil Wilson, chief markets analyst at Markets.com, said of the rally: &#8220;Whilst we are not there yet, news that this vaccine could be highly effective is the best thing markets could hope for.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Public health officials will remind us there is a long road ahead, and many challenges will be faced along the way, but there is an enormous sense of optimism today.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asia trading concluded ahead of the vaccine boost.<\/p>\n<p>The Nikkei and China&#8217;s Shanghai Composite were each up by about 2% while Hong Kong&#8217;s Hang Seng and South Korea&#8217;s Kospi each added just over 1%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"sdc-article-widget sdc-article-image\">\n<figure class=\"sdc-article-image__figure\">\n<div class=\"sdc-article-image__wrapper\" data-aspect-ratio=\"16\/9\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"sdc-article-image__item\" src=\"https:\/\/e3.365dm.com\/20\/11\/768x432\/skynews-nikkei-japan-traders_5166458.jpg?bypass-service-worker&amp;20201109071432\" alt=\"Employee of the foreign exchange trading company work in front of monitors showing, Japan&#039;s Nikkei share average, the Japanese yen exchange rate against the U.S. dollar and news on the U.S. presidential election at a dealing room in Tokyo, Japan November 9, 2020. \" data-lazy-loaded=\"true\" \/><\/div><figcaption class=\"sdc-article-image__caption\"><em><span class=\"sdc-article-image__caption-text\">Trading on Monday saw Asian markets react to Mr Biden&#8217;s victory as they had closed before Pfizer&#8217;s announcement<\/span><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>In London, the mood was also helped by an upbeat profit outlook from house builder Taylor Wimpey, which cited a quicker than expected recovery in the market from its coronavirus-induced slump.<\/p>\n<p>That lifted its shares by 12%, pushing it to the top of the FTSE 100 risers&#8217;
