Baltr\u0117nas\u2019 appointment marks a significant milestone not only for Lithuania but also for NATO\u2019s evolving military leadership at a time of heightened geopolitical tension, particularly with ongoing concerns about Russia\u2019s military posture and the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThis is one of the highest military posts within NATO, and I accept the responsibility with humility and determination,\u201d Baltr\u0117nas said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
A Political-Military Balance<\/h3>\n
Speaking on NATO\u2019s identity, Baltr\u0117nas emphasized that the Alliance remains a political-military organization.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cThere\u2019s a well-calibrated mechanism between political directives and military execution. The North Atlantic Council provides the political framework, and our job is to translate that into actionable military plans,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Baltr\u0117nas will oversee more than 500 officers from across the 32 NATO member states, working to ensure unity and operational coherence despite occasional political tensions among member nations \u2014 such as the longstanding rift between Greece and T\u00fcrkiye.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cOur decisions are made by consensus, and my role is to help build that consensus through negotiation, diplomacy, and dialogue,\u201d Baltr\u0117nas noted. \u201cSometimes that means personally engaging with member nations at the highest military level.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
On Readiness and the Eastern Flank<\/h3>\n
With NATO\u2019s eastern border increasingly seen as a potential flashpoint, Baltr\u0117nas brings critical experience to the role, having previously served as Lithuania\u2019s Chief of Defence Staff.<\/p>\n
While acknowledging there is one unified NATO strategy, he recognized the specific security realities of the eastern flank, including the Baltic states.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI cannot advocate for national interests anymore, but I can share my decades of experience to help shape effective collective defence plans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Baltr\u0117nas also addressed rising concerns over Russia\u2019s potential preparation for a future conflict with NATO, as flagged by intelligence agencies in Poland, Germany, and Sweden.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cRussia\u2019s preparedness is fluid and depends largely on the course of its war in Ukraine. NATO continuously assesses these dynamics to remain ready,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
Article 5 and Deterrence: \u201cNATO Is Already Defending Every Centimetre\u201d<\/h3>\n
In response to fears among some citizens in frontline states like Lithuania that NATO might respond too late in the event of aggression, Baltr\u0117nas offered reassurance.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cNATO is defending every centimetre of its territory not tomorrow, but now,\u201d he affirmed. \u201cMany of our efforts aren\u2019t visible to the public, but they are in motion. The Alliance\u2019s collective strength and deterrent posture are operational.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
He also made it clear that any decision to move from deterrence to a proactive military initiative would require a political green light.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cNATO is already deeply involved in helping Ukraine \u2014 through training, logistics, and support. But further military actions would need political consensus,\u201d Baltr\u0117nas added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
A Lithuanian at the Helm<\/h3>\n
Baltr\u0117nas\u2019 appointment comes at a symbolic moment for Lithuania and the broader Baltic region, which continues to advocate for stronger NATO presence and preparedness.<\/p>\n
