Zambia has officially declared an end to its latest cholera outbreak after five consecutive weeks without any new reported infections, the Ministry of Health announced on Monday.<\/p>\n
Health Minister Elijah Muchima confirmed that the final wave of the outbreak which began earlier this year resulted in 496 confirmed cases and 9 deaths. The last recorded case was identified in May 2025 in Kabwe District, located in the Central Province.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a significant public health milestone for the country,\u201d Minister Muchima stated, adding that while the official outbreak status has ended, government vigilance will remain in place.<\/p>\n
Risk Remains Amid Drought Conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n Health officials have warned that Zambia is not entirely out of danger. The country continues to face prolonged drought, a condition that weakens access to safe drinking water and sanitation infrastructure \u2014 both critical in preventing waterborne diseases like cholera.<\/p>\n \u201cThe threat of resurgence is real, especially in high-risk zones where water scarcity and poor hygiene persist,\u201d Muchima noted.<\/p>\n To counter this, the Ministry of Health is ramping up prevention measures. Medical supplies have been prepositioned in vulnerable areas, and community-based surveillance is being enhanced to detect and treat acute diarrhea a potential early sign of cholera before it escalates.<\/p>\n Public Awareness and Preparedness<\/strong><\/p>\n In addition to surveillance and medical readiness, health teams are intensifying public education campaigns focused on hygiene, water safety, and the early signs of infection.
