Namibia\u2019s national carrier on Wednesday announced it was ending operations after the Southern African country\u2019s government approved the loss-making airline’s liquidation.<\/p>\n
\u201cEffective Thursday, 11 February 2021, all flight operations will be canceled with all aircraft returning to base\u201d, read a notice from the company.<\/p>\n
Customers with outstanding bookings were told \u2018register their claims for refund\u2019 by calling the company\u2019s offices.<\/p>\n
Air Namibia had failed in its multiple recovery attempts despite several years of state bailouts.<\/p>\n
Over 600 workers are set to lose their jobs. Namibia\u2019s government said affected staff would get full compensation.<\/p>\n
Namibia\u2019s ministry of public enterprises, the ministry of finance, Air Namibia’s executive committee members, and unions were expected to meet on Thursday for the government to give its stance on the liquidation process, reported the Namibian, a local daily.<\/p>\n
From its hub at Windhoek\u2019s Hosea Kutako International Airport, the airline operated flights to neighboring South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, Zambia, and Botswana.<\/p>\n
It also flew to Frankfurt, Germany.<\/p>\n
The airline operated a fleet of 10 aircraft including two Airbus A330s.<\/p>\n
With a very small fleet and high operating costs, the airline struggled to make a profit.<\/p>\n
During his State of the Nation address last June, President Hage Geingob called for the company to be dissolved.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have a very serious problem with Air Namibia\u201d, the President said.<\/p>\n
In October 2019, the airline\u2019s $119 million bailout appeal was turned down but after talks, the government underwrote a $34 million loan to keep the firm afloat.<\/p>\n
The 75-year-old airline has received a total of $477 million from the state between 1999 and 2019.<\/p>\n
The company\u2019s precarious financial situation was worsened by the coronavirus pandemic, which saw the airline halt operations for months.<\/p>\n
At the beginning of February, the airline\u2019s board resigned after accusing the state of interference.<\/p>\n
Observers say many African airlines, already struggling pre-Covid, will likely fail to shake off the effects of the pandemic and will need heavy cash injections to stay in the air.<\/p>\n
