Students were heard murmuring in discord after she commented that she was disappointed that some educated men would still rape women.<\/p>\n
South African social media was lit after a video of her comment started trending all over with some trolling her for not understanding dynamics on rape matters.<\/p>\n
In South Africa, rape is a scourge. Official statistics are dizzying. Over the twelve months from April 2017 to March 2018, 40,035 rapes were recorded, or 110 per day.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn South Africa, two women are murdered every day by someone they love. Not a stranger. Someone they love. I told my mother I was raped, she told me I was lying. As a mother, what do you think? For her, it had to be a lie. Because she couldn\u2019t accept the truth, she blamed everything on me, and we were thinking about it.\u201d Told Debi Steven, founder of ABS and rape survivor.<\/p>\n
These classes teach girls \u201cnot to keep quiet,\u201d says one mother, Mali Masondo, who was raped in her childhood and forced to remain silent for a long time by her family.<\/p>\n
The NGO\u2019s training program \u201cdoes not focus on the physical aspect. It aims at the emancipation\u201d of women, explains Debi Steven. Her NGO seeks to develop boys\u2019 empathy towards girls in order to prevent any abusive behavior.<\/p>\n
Convinced by ABS\u2019s approach, which has reached more than 13,000 children in the country, the South African Ministry of Health has just called on the NGO to train 160 anti-rape instructors.<\/p>\n
In 2016, a group of anti-rape protesters staged a silent protest, disrupting former South African president Jacob Zuma\u2019s speech at the electoral commission\u2019s results center.<\/p>\n
The protesters, four young ladies, according to the IOL news portal, marched to the front of the podium just when the president had mounted it.<\/p>\n
Without uttering a word, they held out four cardboards with the inscriptions, \u201cKhanga\u201d, \u201cI am 1 in 3\u201d, \u201c10 years later\u201d and \u201cRemember Khwezi\u201d.<\/p>\n
