The cutting-edge system uses <strong data-start=\"294\" data-end=\"308\">3D cameras<\/strong> to capture detailed images of patients from every angle, allowing doctors from around the world to assess cases remotely and provide expert opinions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"462\" data-end=\"833\">For <strong data-start=\"466\" data-end=\"489\">Charles Owusu Aseku<\/strong>, a man who has battled a recurring <strong data-start=\"525\" data-end=\"554\">keloid growth on his neck<\/strong> for over two decades, the trial represents a long-awaited breakthrough. Having spent tens of thousands of dollars and undergone two unsuccessful surgeries, Aseku now hopes that <strong data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"795\">multiple specialists assessing his condition simultaneously<\/strong> will lead to an effective solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"835\" data-end=\"1047\">\u201cNormally, when you go to a hospital, you see only one doctor. But here, I\u2019ve seen a lot of doctors from different places, which makes me happy because their combined experience might finally help me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1328\">During the trials, doctors are stationed nearby, observing <strong data-start=\"1108\" data-end=\"1133\">3D images of patients<\/strong> and discussing treatment options. However, in a real-world setting, this technology could <strong data-start=\"1224\" data-end=\"1281\">enable pre- and post-operative consultations remotely<\/strong>, significantly reducing the need for travel.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1376\"><strong data-start=\"1334\" data-end=\"1374\">Improving Access to Specialized Care<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1378\" data-end=\"1487\">Beyond complex cases like Aseku\u2019s, <strong data-start=\"1413\" data-end=\"1484\">3D telemedicine could be life-changing for patients in remote areas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1914\"><strong data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1505\">George Opoku<\/strong>, a 68-year-old farmer from Akyem Pameng in Ghana\u2019s Eastern Region, was referred to <strong data-start=\"1589\" data-end=\"1619\">Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital<\/strong> in Accra for a <strong data-start=\"1635\" data-end=\"1660\">sarcoma in his armpit<\/strong>. The trip would have required an overnight stay and high transportation costs. Instead, his doctor at <strong data-start=\"1763\" data-end=\"1794\">Koforidua Regional Hospital<\/strong> enrolled him in the <strong data-start=\"1815\" data-end=\"1840\">3D telemedicine trial<\/strong>, allowing him to be examined by specialists without leaving his region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1916\" data-end=\"2071\">\u201cI was happy I didn\u2019t have to travel all the way to Korle-Bu. It would have been expensive, especially for transportation and accommodation,\u201d Opoku said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2073\" data-end=\"2213\">Experts believe this <strong data-start=\"2094\" data-end=\"2138\">technology can bridge the healthcare gap<\/strong> in Ghana by <strong data-start=\"2151\" data-end=\"2210\">connecting rural patients with top specialists globally<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2215\" data-end=\"2263\"><strong data-start=\"2219\" data-end=\"2261\">A Future of Remote Healthcare in Ghana<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2265\" data-end=\"2422\">Microsoft\u2019s <strong data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2299\">principal engineer<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2301\" data-end=\"2319\">Spencer Fowers<\/strong>, is optimistic about the trial\u2019s potential to <strong data-start=\"2366\" data-end=\"2405\">revolutionize medical consultations<\/strong> across Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2424\" data-end=\"2676\">\u201cYou can rotate the patient\u2019s image, look at them from any angle, and doctors can even <strong data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2541\">draw directly on the image<\/strong> to indicate treatment plans. This allows for <strong data-start=\"2587\" data-end=\"2654\">pre- or post-surgical consultations without the need for travel<\/strong>,\u201d Fowers explained.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2678\" data-end=\"2955\">Though <strong data-start=\"2685\" data-end=\"2710\">not directly involved<\/strong> in the project, <strong data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2746\">Ahensan Dasebre<\/strong>, a senior resident at the <strong data-start=\"2773\" data-end=\"2845\">National Reconstructive Plastic Surgery and Burns Centre at Korle-Bu<\/strong>, supports the initiative, highlighting Ghana\u2019s doctor shortage and the need for <strong data-start=\"2926\" data-end=\"2952\">telemedicine solutions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2957\" data-end=\"3236\">\u201cWe are already behind in terms of the number of doctors available to care for our population.
